You find a great fare, book it, and a few weeks later realise you paid for an extra bag fee, a hidden charge or a non-refundable room you can no longer use. Most travel booking mistakes are easy to avoid once you know them. Here are seven common ones that cost travelers money, and how to sidestep each of them.
Mistake 1: Booking at the Wrong Time Without Watching Prices
Booking months ahead doesn’t always get the best fare, and waiting until the last minute hoping for a bargain often ends with high prices or sold-out flights. The best time to book varies by route and season, so there is no universal rule.
What works: as soon as you know roughly when you want to travel, set a free price alert, for example on Trip.com flights, and watch how the fare moves. Mistake 2: Checking Only One Website
Looking at a single airline or booking site is like buying a car after visiting one dealer. Compare a few sources, including the airline’s own website, before you pay. Prices, fare conditions and included baggage can differ for the same flight or room.
Also compare a flight + hotel bundle with booking the two separately: sometimes the bundle is cheaper, sometimes it isn’t. Ten minutes of comparing is usually well spent.
Mistake 3: Ignoring Baggage Fees and Extras
The advertised fare is rarely the final price. Checked bags, larger cabin bags, seat selection and payment fees can turn a cheap ticket into an expensive one. Many cities have more than one airport. Tokyo has Haneda and Narita; London has Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, London City and Southend. A flight into a secondary airport can be cheaper, but add the transfer: Narita, for example, is much farther from central Tokyo than Haneda. Compare the total cost and time, not just the fare.
Mistake 5: Booking Popular Tours Too Late (or Without Checking Cancellation)
Limited-capacity tours, popular attractions with timed entry, and trips in peak season can sell out, so book those early. Many other activities, such as food tours and city walks, often still have space a few days before.

A flexible fare or a free-cancellation room may cost a little more, but it can save you the full price if your plans change. Consider travel insurance that covers cancellation and medical costs, and read what it excludes.
